A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship government projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” affirmed the country's president.
The official reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term concluded the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
