Roughly 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to police.
Cars, building surfaces and mailboxes were marked, in some cases with swastikas, they announced in a release.
Law enforcement state they were notified late on Wednesday evening, when a man discovered that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish substance.
The substance had been placed in the pattern of a swastika, they reported.
Law enforcement then discovered many other smeared automobiles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under legislation prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials report early analysis indicate the liquid was probably human bodily fluid.
"There is still no lead as to its source; officials are not yet informed of any physical harm in relation with the occurrence," they commented.
Local authorities announced they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have requested to the public for tips.
An important official commented the vandalism left him speechless and had to be resolved promptly.
"This incident hits the center of Hanau and revives the trauma of the extremist terrorist attack five years ago," he stated on a platform, referring to the death of nine people by a shooter focusing on people of immigrant origin in February 2020.
