The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
