Federal Reserve Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs created to the market in August was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that showed that costs are going up, although gradually. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
