Early Saturday morning, reports emerged of significant blasts rocking Tehran, amid claims from Israel that it had conducted a preemptive military action.
Loud Blasts and Plumes of Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
According to eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were audible in the city on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, columns of thick smoke were observed rising over the centre and east of the city.
“The nature of these blasts suggests that this is a missile attack,” one news agency stated, though it did not initially offer additional information.
Context: Escalating Strains and Recent Events
The incident takes place against a backdrop of sharply increased tensions in the region. Key events leading up to this strike include:
- US Military Buildup: A significant buildup of American warships in the region, featuring the repositioning of carrier strike groups.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent discussions between the United States and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with suggestions of more talks planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the attack, a senior US official had labeled Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and delivered threats regarding its weapons development.
- Ultimatum: Reportedly, a time limit of roughly two weeks had been given to Iran to settle the atomic standoff or face serious repercussions.
Reaction from Tehran
Reacting to prior accusations, Iranian authorities had charged the United States of spreading “falsehoods” about its defensive capabilities. They dismissed assertions about missile development and casualty figures as baseless.
These developments remains fast-moving, with further updates anticipated as events unfold.
