Tetris Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Whenever a prominent awards ceremony draws close, there’s always an outcry to include of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.

Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize since similar to blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely that year
  • Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked recently
  • Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often compact experiences, however the design of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
