The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a dare for partners in committed relationships who appreciate scary movies: Sit down with your partner and watch Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its online premiere on the Hulu service. On the surface, it could look like conventional biological terror, but inside Together lies a profound examination about our choices in loving each other.

An Introductory Film Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for a decade. Married in actuality in 2017, the actors bring a unique chemistry to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The narrative begins when Tim and Millie move from the urban environment to the rural area for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, sure, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their country house, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim discover an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity takes hold of the pair. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a slow burn fright fest, interspersing moments of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but tastefully done) body horror, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and delivers them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and removed from his network of friends. He is terrified of the idea of completely losing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in Together refrains from painting either of his characters the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie confront the kind of problems that come with any relationship over a long period. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these concerns of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the symbolism never feels clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that single viewers have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. On the other hand, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could function as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the ending sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your partner and say, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform at present.
